Folk festival organizer Toby Winning is found dead, his head held down in a bowl of water also containing eels and eggs. His estranged wife Alice seems unconcerned, unlike co-organizer Brian Grey, who, with Toby, had been planning to move the festival from Lower Crosby to London - to the annoyance of local businessmen including pub landlord Frank Wainwright and sound engineer Danny Carver. Danny is also angry when his daughter Melody takes to the stage playing the guitar once owned by his brother Johnny, a famous folk singer who shot himself. Visiting musician Jay Templeton seems keen to help Melody's career but was expecting something from Toby. Two more deaths follow, both in the manner of murders in a local folk song and to solve them Barnaby must discover the importance of Johnny's lost recording of the Ballad of Midsomer County. Stone persuades Ruth to join him in investigating the disappearance of solicitor Steve Eli, tracing his last journey to a spot where two other men were slain. From this Stone deduces that taxi driver Leonard Vance, who killed both victims, also murdered Eli and he and Ruth interview Vance in a secure hospital in the company of his psychiatrist Dr Ellesmere and Alex Wernley, who wrote a book on Vance and other killers. Vance admits to killing Eli but claims not to remember where he hid the body and when Stone takes him to a likely burial place he collapses and is rushed to hospital. The school turns out for Grantly's funeral, with Tariq turning up to pay his respects. The funeral over, Nikki has a difficult day. It takes a lot of persuasion for her to convince Carol Barry that Kasey should go to a boxing camp in Miami and then she has an unexpected visit from Eve, the daughter she has not seen in years and whose father told her Nikki was dead. Eve quickly sees that Nikki's maternal instincts are secondary to her professional outlook and is angry that she seems to be giving Kasey more attention than her own daughter, especially when Nikki rings Stuart, Eve's father to take her home. However, after Kasey has consoled Eve the parting takes place with the promise of more contact between mother and child. The sponsored clean goes awry when Dynasty mixes cleaning fluids and produces chlorine gas and Sue slips on a wet floor.
